Tadano has launched two new hybrid all-terrain cranes, which feature a battery electric superstructure. The AC 4.070HL-1 is the market-ready version of the four-axle 70-t crane that was showcased as a tech demo back in 2022. Since then, the unit has undergone both testing and real-life use. The 120-t AC 5.120H-1 is the next model in the series and was recently presented at bauma 2025.

\n\n

The ‘Tadano Green Solutions’ (TGS) environmental protection strategy has an objective of reducing the company’s CO2 emissions between 2019 and 2030 by 25% worldwide. Over the same period, Tadano aims to cut CO2 emissions from the use of its products by 35%. The goal is to be completely climate neutral by 2050.

\n\n

According to Tadano, an important step towards its sustainability goal is the development of the hybrid crane solutions, which generate about 60% less CO2 than diesel-powered superstructures. The company said electric crane operation offers a system efficiency of around 85%, representing more than double the energy efficiency of an efficient diesel engine.

\n\n

Flexible power options

\n\n

A combination of conventional travel and fully electric on-site operation is made possible by these new hybrid models. More specifically, the carrier’s diesel engine is responsible for bringing the crane to the jobsite, where the engine can then be switched off for the duration of the work once the outriggers have been deployed.

\n\n

Meanwhile, the high-voltage (HV) battery in the superstructure powers an electric motor, as well as the thermal management system and the superstructure cab’s air conditioning. The electric motor powers the hydraulic system used for crane operation, all with zero restrictions on the corresponding performance.

\n\n

The hybrid cranes can be operated both self-sufficiently with their own battery power and with the support of an external power source, such as temporary jobsite power. The latter not only extends a unit’s multi-hour electric runtime, but can also relieve the load on the HV battery.

\n\n

In addition, the hybrid cranes remain fully operational even when the HV battery is fully depleted and no external power supply is available. This is thanks to a generator that is driven by a power take-off on the carrier’s diesel engine and that charges the HV battery and allows for continued crane operation.

\n\n

Various applications

\n\n

Crane owners and rental companies benefit directly from reduced operating costs as a result of the maintenance-free electric motor and the elimination of the superstructure diesel engine. With the electric motor, there are no exhaust emissions anymore and the vibration and noise are kept to a minimum, all of which is coupled with continuous heating and air conditioning even in standby mode.

\n\n

Some applications suitable for the hybrid cranes include:

Use in indoor areas (e.g. buildings in the event, manufacturing and logistics industries).
\n\t
\n\t
Use in outdoor areas sensitive to exhaust and noise emissions (e.g. urban areas, hospital grounds, zoos, nature reserves, or occupied residential buildings).
\n\t
\n\t
Use during quiet hours (at night, on Sundays and public holidays).
\n\t

\n\n

Versatile operating modes

\n\n

A). Battery-only mode: The charged HV battery supplies all the power that the electric motor needs in order to drive the crane’s hydraulic pump. In this mode, the AC 4.070HL-1 can run for more than four hours with a full battery charge, while the AC 5.120H-1 can run for an entire working day under the same conditions.

\n\n

B). Battery mode assisted by external power supply: During crane operation and pauses in operation, the HV battery is continuously recharged through the external power supply connected to the CEE vehicle inlet. Depending on the selected amperage, this makes continuous electric crane operation possible.

\n\n

C). External-power-supply-only mode: Even if the HV battery is depleted, the crane can continue to work through its external power connection. Since the HV battery is also charged during pauses in crane operation, it can deliver levels of performance exceeding the externally supplied energy after charging briefly.

\n\n

D). Battery mode assisted by generator: The carrier’s diesel engine charges the HV battery with the generator and the battery buffers the supplied power. Accordingly, the crane’s hydraulic system can briefly work with peak loads that are significantly greater than the maximum continuous power supplied by the generator.

\n\n

The generator can be used during travel and when stationary, and can work in three operating modes: silent mode, eco mode and power mode. Thanks to the manual regenerative braking function, the generator can run when the vehicle is coasting during travel, saving fuel as a result. This reduces the load on the retarder and boosts the crane’s braking action.

\n\n

E). Emergency operation: The crane can also be de-rigged with the 24-V vehicle electrical system, in which case the telescoping sections are retracted and the boom is lowered to its transport position.

\n\n

The high-voltage system

\n\n

The HV system on the AC 4.070HL-1 (up to 800 V) has been customised to perfectly match the power required by the unchanged hydraulic system. Among the highlights are:

HV battery pack: lithium-ion NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) battery.
\n\t
\n\t
Battery capacity: 70 kWh total capacity, of which approximately 80% is usable.
\n\t
\n\t
Electric motor: continuous output of 115 kW, peak torque of 1,200 Nm.
\n\t
\n\t
Generator: charging power >50 kW, continuous output of 85 kW, peak torque of 500 Nm.
\n\t
\n\t
Onboard charger: CEE vehicle inlet, 400 VAC, 63 A, limiting to 32 A possible.
\n\t
\n\t
Battery runtime: approximately 6.3 hr (load cycle 1), approximately 3.9 hr (load cycle 3).
\n\t
\n\t
Charging time with onboard charger (63 A): 10% to 90% state of charge (SoC) in approximately 1 hr.
\n\t
\n\t
Charging time with generator while working at jobsites: 10% to 90% SoC in approximately 1 hr.
\n\t
\n\t
Charging time with generator during travel: +55% SoC in approximately 1 hr.

The thermal management system ensures that the HV battery always works at its optimal operating temperature and that it will reach its optimal service life. The result is a high residual capacity of about 80% of the new battery’s SoH (state of health) even after 3,000 charging cycles. Partial charges only count towards these cycles proportionally and have a more positive effect on the battery’s lifespan the longer and more frequently the SoC remains in the middle range.

\n\n

The hybrid crane design was planned in such a way as to be used across models, so that Tadano’s electrification for the AC 5.120H-1 is based directly on that of the AC 4.070HL-1. The front section of the five-axle crane’s superstructure supports an optional second HV battery pack. This doubling of the battery capacity to a total capacity of 140 kWh means that battery electric operation for a full working day without any external charging is possible.

\n\n

Thanks to the optimised compact rear storage box next to the vehicle inlet, the machine can easily carry the usual crane equipment. The generator drive has been optimised further and runs maintenance-free directly off the transfer case between the second and third axles.

Liebherr’s MK 88-4.1 and LTC 1050-3.1 mobile cranes are designed for global markets. These machines were recently presented to the global trade media during the group’s 2023 press tour event, which was held on 6-7 November in Germany.

\n\n

The MK 88-4.1 mobile construction crane is suitable for use in densely populated city centres, on night construction sites and in residential areas. The crane can be unfolded and positioned close to buildings and requires only minimal floor space.

\n\n

With a lifting capacity of up to 2.2 t at a maximum radius of 45 m, the four-axle MK 88-4.1 offers high flexibility in a wide range of construction projects. The crane has the capacity to lift up to 8 t.

\n\n

The MK 88-4.1 can be operated in electric mode using site electricity instead of its diesel engine, delivering zero emissions locally and a low noise level. According to Liebherr, using site power makes crane operation significantly more cost-efficient. Over a year, this results in only 10% of the operating costs associated with use of a diesel engine.

\n\n

If there is insufficient or no on-site power available, Liebherr’s mobile battery-based energy storage system Liduro Power Port (LPO) is able to take over supply, so that hybrid or all-electric construction machines can be operated and charged locally with zero emissions. A diesel-powered generator is also available as an option.

\n\n

The alternative fuel HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) can be used for the engine in its pure form or mixed with diesel to any required ratio. Liebherr said fuel for its machines comes from food industry waste, without using palm oil. By reducing exhaust gases, HVO helps to limit global greenhouse gas emissions. The fuel is fully compatible with all engine components.

\n\n

Meanwhile, the 50-t Liebherr LTC 1050-3.1 mobile crane is also available with an electric motor (72 kW), in addition to its six-cylinder engine. Depending on the job conditions, either the engine or the electric motor can be selected in crane mode.

\n\n

The electric motor reduces both air and noise emissions to a minimum, making the LTC 1050-3.1 suitable for use in noise-sensitive and zero-emission areas. The engine can be fuelled with HVO without restrictions, helping to reduce its CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to fuelling it with diesel.

\n\n

Liebherr revealed that only the electric motor and a distributor gear as well as the required control equipment need to be added to the existing LTC 1050-3.1 to transform it into an electric version. Such a simple solution enables the operator to switch flexibly between diesel-hydraulic power and electro-hydraulic power.

\n\n

The electric motor uses the existing hydraulic pump, which is mounted on the powershift transmission. The distributor gear is located between the crane pump and the powershift transmission.

\n\n

Site current at 125 A is required to achieve full performance, but the LTC 1050-3.1 also works well with a 63 A supply, said Liebherr. Alternatively, the crane can be operated using an external battery pack if the site does not have the appropriate electrical infrastructure.

\n\n

Other features for the electric version of the LTC 1050-3.1 include a 36-m Telematik telescopic boom, RemoteDrive option for remote-controlled driving, and height-adjustable elevating cab.

\n\n

In mid-2021, Bauer Maschinen Group brought its first drilling rig with an electric drive on the market, the eBG 33. Now the company has opened up another chapter in electrification and launched the new, fully battery-powered version of its electric drilling rigs – the eBG 33 H all electric.

\n\n

With the additional electrification of the main consumers such as the rotary drive and main winch, the new machine defines new standards for energy efficiency. This new eBG model relies on a completely new generation of the B-Tronic control and visualisation system, the B-Tronic 5, with innovative solutions in human-machine interaction and additional functions in the area of data management.

\n\n

In addition, Bauer’s subsidiary RTG Rammtechnik GmbH has unveiled its new RG 19 T hybrid. The system capacity is achieved with a diesel engine and an additional electric drive, which considerably reduces the CO2 and noise emissions.

\n\n

With this new model, RTG is setting standards in the telescopic leader segment. All RG models on the BS 55 RS and BS 65 RS base carriers can be offered with this hybrid technology in the future. The ‘operate’ remote control is also available in the hybrid version. The new RTG Pile Driver app allows the operator to handle the machine quickly and safely. Moreover, a complete service can be carried out on the equipment with the help of the app.

\n\n

Bauer’s subsidiary Klemm Bohrtechnik GmbH also offers its electric model – the KR 806-3E – which features proven technology from the KR 806-3GS rig, however as an electrohydraulic, emission-free variant. The intelligent control system enables the use of batteries as a booster for drilling operation to reduce the required electricity load. Compared to the diesel-hydraulic variant, there are no restrictions when it comes to power and application.

The EC300E Hybrids from Volvo CE are currently undergoing field tests at customer sites in order to validate the technology in real world applications, prior to their commercialisation.

\n\n

Unlike other systems that capture the swing energy of an excavator’s superstructure to electrically assist the engine, Volvo’s novel hydraulic hybrid harvests ‘free’ energy generated by the down motion of the excavator’s boom and uses it to supercharge the hydraulic system.

\n\n

The powerful and regular boom-down motions charge 20-l hydraulic accumulators, which then deliver energy to drive hydraulic assist motors that help power the hydraulic pump. There are the same levels of controllability and performance as the standard EC300E, including the ability to work in Eco mode and Hybrid mode simultaneously.

\n\n

The EC300E Hybrid is said to deliver between 10-12% lower fuel consumption, up to 12% less CO2 emissions – and all with no loss of performance. When used in production ‘dig and dump’ applications (especially those with a 90-degree swing) the payback of this simple approach can be a little more than a year, said Volvo CE. The machine provides the same levels of controllability and performance that users would expect from the equivalent conventional machine, and up to 17% fuel efficiency improvement dependent on application.

\n\n

The componentry is also simple, added Volvo CE, consisting of just a few add-on components that are simple to maintain.

Rubble Master has taken the development of its RM GO! product line to the next level with the unveiling of the RM 120GO! Next hybrid crusher. With this latest innovation, the RM MSC8500e - the hybrid screen developed by Rubble Master and Maximus - can be powered through the new RM 120GO! Next.

\n\n

The RM MSC8500e was built based on the RM MSC8500M screen unit. The machine’s hydraulic drives have been replaced with electric ones, and only the crawler gear remains hydraulic.

\n\n

Both the RM 120GO! Next crusher and RM MSC8500M screen can now operate from a single power source. The crusher’s high-power generator supplies the electricity without the need for an additional diesel engine, thus reducing emissions and noise levels. Apart from the single source crushing, the hybrid screen can also be operated by a diesel engine or other external power sources.

\n\n

Furthermore, the screen and the crusher can communicate with each other without wires or cables, said Rubble Master. When the crusher’s discharge belts are started, the screen also starts automatically. If blockages or faults occur, the screen also stops automatically.

\n\n

The RM Operations Assist makes communication between operators and machines easier. LED lights in three colours (green, yellow and red) show the machine’s current status. Essentially, these machine communication lights distinguish between operation, service and alert and they are standard features on the RM 120GO! Next and RM MSC8500e.

\n\n

The RM GO! Smart app provides live data on the machine, daily reports, and in the event of problems, instructions on remedying the fault direct to the smart terminal.
