Saudi Arabia’s Prime Minister, HRH Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, has announced the launch of New Murabba Development Company (NMDC) which aims to develop the world’s largest modern downtown in Riyadh, contributing to the city’s future development in line with Saudi Vision 2030. The Crown Prince also serves as chairman of NMDC.

\n\n

The New Murabba project will be built around the concept of sustainability, revealed NMDC, featuring green areas and walking and cycling paths that enhance the quality of life by promoting healthy, active lifestyles and community activities. It will also comprise an iconic museum, a technology and design university, a multipurpose immersive theatre, and more than 80 entertainment and culture venues.

\n\n

Situated at the intersection of King Salman and King Khalid roads to the north west of Riyadh, the project covers an area of 19 sq km to accommodate hundreds of thousands of residents. It will offer more than 25 mil sq m of floor area, featuring more than 104,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms and more than 980,000 sq m of retail space, as well as 1.4 mil sq m of office space, 620,000 sq m of leisure assets and 1.8 mil sq m of space dedicated to community facilities.

\n\n

NMDC said the New Murabba will provide a living, working and entertainment experience within a 15-minute walking radius and will have its own internal transport system. It will be approximately 20-minute drive from the airport.

\n\n

The iconic ‘Mukaab’

\n\n

At the heart of the project is the ‘Mukaab’, an iconic landmark featuring the latest innovative technologies. It will be one of the largest built structures in the world, standing 400 m high, 400 m wide and 400 m long, according to NMDC. The cubic shape of the Mukaab will ensure the ultimate utilisation of space to accommodate the technologies necessary to develop the icon.

\n\n

Inspired by the modern Najdi architectural style, the Mukaab is set to be the world’s first immersive destination offering an experience created by digital and virtual technology with the latest holographics, said NMDC.

\n\n

The Mukaab will encompass a tower atop a spiral base, and a structure featuring 2 mil sq m of floor space that will be a premium hospitality destination with a multitude of retail, cultural and tourist attractions, along with residential and hotel units, commercial spaces, and recreational facilities.

\n\n

The launch of NMDC is part of the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund’s (PIF) strategy to unlock the capabilities of promising sectors, enable the private sector and increase local content, contribute to the development of real estate projects and the local infrastructure, and diversify sources of income for the Saudi economy. It is expected to add SAR180 billion to non-oil GDP and create 334,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2030. The project is due for completion in 2030.

Taking place online from 9 to 10 March 2021, Hillhead Digital - the virtual edition of Hillhead show - will combine a multi-stream conference with an innovative exhibition platform that will allow the industry to connect and engage. Hillhead is the UK's largest quarrying exhibition targeted at the quarrying, construction and recycling industries globally.

\n\n

Hillhead Digital will feature 40 free-to-attend seminars and panel sessions providing invaluable insights into the key themes that will shape and transform the extractives and construction industry over the next decade: Digitalisation, Decarbonisation and Infrastructure. This will be complemented by a dedicated stream run by The Institute of Quarrying, exploring the technical and leadership skills that the people delivering this transformational change will need to master.

\n\n

Visitors to Hillhead Digital will also be able to browse 500 virtual booths, sourcing the latest equipment and service solutions in the industry. Functionality will allow them to pre-arrange meetings; chat or Zoom live; download brochures, conference handouts and other useful information into their virtual basket; consume exclusive new product videos; peer-to-peer network; and much more.

\n\n

Richard Bradbury, managing director of The QMJ Group explained, “With exhibitors unable to showcase their products and services at physical exhibitions over the last year, Hillhead Digital will provide a dynamic platform for the community to reconnect and share all of the positive developments that will help shape the construction recovery.

\n\n

“Our digital-format event will extend Hillhead’s international reach and increase its coverage of the technology sector and younger demographic groups. It will celebrate the enormous contribution the sector makes to the UK and provide an exciting prelude to the physical event we look forward to delivering from 22–24 June 2021.”

Hillhead will return from 23 to 25 June 2020 at the Hillhead Quarry, near Buxton, the UK. The show organiser said that 550 exhibitors have now confirmed their participation, making it a record-breaking event.

\n\n

Event director Richard Bradbury said, “With extensions to both the outdoor and indoor areas, we have been able to accommodate more exhibitors than ever before - providing our visitors with an unrivalled range of suppliers to source from.”

\n\n

All the usual Hillhead regulars will be joined by a host of new companies including Prinoth, Cemen Tech, Sany Europe, Flogas, Shell International, Hidromek, Elkon, Kal Tire, Goldhofer, Aerzen, Magotteaux, Yanmar, Magni Telescopic Handlers, McLanahan Corporation, Merlo UK and Fruehauf, among others.

\n\n

The organiser further announced an ambitious site-development programme, which will see hard-wired fibre-optic broadband installed strategically across the showground. This new solution will deliver three times the bandwidth provided at the 2018 event, increasing capacity from 300 MB to more than 1 GB.

\n\n

“The application of digital tools in quarrying and construction is becoming increasingly prevalent. It’s important that Hillhead keeps ahead of the curve, enabling our exhibitors to showcase the latest technology available to the industry,” said Mr Bradbury.

\n\n

“This investment will allow exhibitors to book more powerful Internet packages at a lower cost than before. Free Wi-Fi hotspots will also be available around the site for visitors to download their e-mails and go online.”
