Lee Maynard has been appointed as new global sales director for tower cranes at Terex Cranes. He was previously the company’s director of sales for Europe & Russia in the mobile cranes business. He was also general manager for the UK and Ireland (UK&I) and will continue in this role until a successor is found.

\n\n

Mr Maynard will be based in the Schaffhausen Terex Global office in Switzerland and in his new role, will develop long-term strategies and identify growth opportunities in the global tower crane market with the objective of increasing the company’s worldwide market share and profitability.

\n\n

Mr Maynard will be taking over management duties for the global Terex tower cranes sales team in EMEAR (Europe, Middle East, Africa and Russia), North America, East Asia, and Australia & New Zealand.

\n\n

A qualified engineer, Mr Maynard has been with Terex Corporation since 2001 as a result of the acquisition of German crane and excavator manufacturer Atlas, and since then he has been in a number of positions of increasing responsibility. Initially, after switching from engineering, he was a regional sales manager for Terex Construction, and in 2010 became the UK&I general manager for mobile cranes.

In 2012, Mr Maynard assumed responsibility for the European sales and service organisations for mobile cranes as part of the management team. Most recently, he was responsible for all sales activities in Europe, Russia and in CIS member states.

Terex has just announced that it has agreed to sell its Demag mobile cranes business to Tadano Ltd for an enterprise value of approximately US$215 million.

\n\n

The Demag mobile cranes business manufactures and sells all-terrain cranes and large crawler cranes. Included in the transaction are the manufacturing facilities in Zweibrucken, Germany and multiple sales and service locations. The sale, which is subject to government regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions, is targeted to close in mid-2019.

\n\n

“The Demag mobile cranes business has been part of our company for almost two decades and produces world class products,” said John L. Garrison, chairman and CEO of Terex. “The dedicated Demag mobile cranes team members have made significant contributions to Terex and to the crane industry. The sale is based on strong industrial logic, as the Demag mobile cranes business will become part of a global crane company with complementary products and capabilities. We are pleased to have entered into this agreement with Tadano, a strategic buyer who values the Demag mobile cranes brand, technology, distribution network and team members.”

Commenting on the rationale of the deal, Koichi Tadano, Tadano’s representative director, president and CEO said, “This is a strategic acquisition that offers Tadano considerable scope for growth. The addition of the well-respected Demag brand of all-terrain cranes and large crawler cranes range extends our product lines and options for customers. The addition of the Demag branded mobile crane product lines will enhance our global position in this segment. We believe that the Zweibrucken facilities and its global team members, as well as the current distribution partners, are valuable to the future success of the business.”

Mr Garrison added, “In addition to selling the Demag mobile cranes business, Terex will exit the North American mobile crane product lines manufactured in our Oklahoma City facility. These changes will simplify our Oklahoma City operation, which will continue to produce telehandlers and re-manufactured units for our Aerial Work Platforms segment and various products for our Materials Pocessing segment.”

Mr Garrison further emphasised that although Terex is exiting the OKC-based mobile cranes products, the company will keep selling parts and offering service and support to its customers.

\n\n

Terex will continue to manufacture Terex Utilities products at its Watertown, South Dakota facilities; Terex rough terrain cranes for the global market in Crespellano, Italy; Terex tower cranes in Fontanafredda, Italy; and Terex pick and carry cranes in Brisbane, Australia. “These are strong businesses that will continue to be an important part of Terex,” stated Mr Garrison.

“During these transitions, our global team is committed to providing exceptional service to all of our global customers, including those affected by these changes.”

When Sarens was tasked to carry out a series of challenging lifts at the Ramagundam Fertiliser Plant in India, the company imported its Demag CC 8800-1 lattice boom crawler crane all the way from Greece to get the job done.

\n\n

Commissioned by the RFCL (Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd), through the project’s EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contractor, Bridge and Roof Company Ltd, Sarens was responsible for lifting heavy equipment at the construction of the Ramagundam Fertiliser Plant.

\n\n

The project involves the construction of a new ammonia plant and a urea plant with capacities of 2,200 t/day and 3,850 t/day respectively, as well as developing an ancillary offsite and utility facilities. In total, around US$750 million (INR 50 billion) is planned to be invested into the project, which is scheduled for completion in late 2018/ early 2019. It is expected to produce 1.12 mil t of urea annually.

\n\n

Upon reviewing the project, Sarens quickly determined it would take a large crane, like its 1,600-t Demag CC 8800-1 crawler crane to complete the job. For the first, and one of the most challenging lifts, Sarens needed to lift a 425-t urea reactor into place. The company then shipped the CC 8800-1 to the Mumbai port, and transported it to the site using multiple trucks.

\n\n

To help set up the crane, Sarens also deployed a Demag CC 2800-1 lattice boom crawler crane. The company was able to safely assemble the machine in just seven days, despite facing space limitations.

\n\n

The 425-t urea reactor measured 53 m in length and 3.8 m in diameter. To perform the lift, the reactor was upended with the Demag CC 8800-1 crane in an SSL 84/72 configuration at a lift radius of 24 m. The CC 2800-1 assist crane was used in an SSL 54 configuration.

\n\n

After lifting the reactor, the CC 8800-1 crane operator slowly slewed and walked the heavy load into position. The 20-member crew battled rain, area constraints and narrow plant roads to complete the project’s first erection safely and within the target schedule.

Terex Cranes has developed the new CTL 272-18 luffing jib tower crane that boasts a 10% increase in jib length over the previous class model. This new crane features a 61 m maximum jib length, 270 ton-meter load moment and maximum full-length load of 2.6 t. The Terex Power Plus system can temporarily increase the maximum load moment under specific and controlled conditions (e.g. reduced dynamics) by 10%, providing the operator extra lifting capacity. \r\n

\r\n

Seven different jib configurations from 30 to 61 m on the CTL 272-18 give contractors the flexibility to meet a range of jobsite reach needs. Equipped with an independent safety line, all jib sections of the crane deliver safe work at height, plus galvanised jib walkways provide long-lasting and dependable service life. The crane’s 5.8-m counter jib boasts multiple job angles to meet demanding in-service and out-of-service conditions. \r\n

The new control system on the CTL 272-18 delivers efficient set-up of expanded crane configurations needed to meet a variety of jobsite demands. The large, 18-cm colour display with antiglare screen displays operating and troubleshooting data to the operator. In addition to Terex Power Plus, Terex Power Match enables the operator to choose between operating performance or energy efficiency to adapt to lifting needs. The new crane offers the choice of hoisting with 1-4 pull lines, affording the flexibility to choose between lifting speed with lighter loads or power and precision when placing heavier objects. Its auto-levelling feature automatically maintains the same hoist block height while luffing the jib. \r\n

The new CTL 272-18 has an 84.4 m maximum freestanding height. The flexible tower design can be configured using a combination of the 1.9-m H20, 2.3-m HD23 and 2.37-m TS212 tower masts, allowing customers to efficiently manage tower section inventory and cost-effectively meet tower needs at multiple sites. Tower masts are equipped with durable aluminium ladders and optimised for transportation to the jobsite.

\r\n

The new Terex cabin on the CTL 272-18 incorporates a comfortable workspace for the operator, including a fully adjustable comfort seat. The joystick controls feature a short stroke length to reduce arm movements and operator fatigue. Standard heating and air conditioning keep the cabin at convenient temperature, even when operating during cold winter months or the heat of summer. Large windows give the operator a panoramic view of the jobsite for excellent visibility. In the event of a broken glass pane during operation, it can be replaced from the inside.

\r\n

The crane’s counter jib with winches and electrical panel powering all crane movements are located at cabin level for convenient access. A service derrick located at the counter jib with 1.25-t lifting capacity conveniently hoists parts to jib-level for maintenance activities. The new CTL 272-18 luffing jib tower crane can be equipped with several advanced options to give more flexibility to the owner for crane configuration. It is ready-equipped for the installation and set-up of zoning and anti-collision system and cameras. The crane is compatible for the next generation of Terex tower telematics, which reports machine operation and service data back to the office.
