Construction works for the Metro Manila Subway Project’s (MMSP) Taguig City segment have commenced, with the groundbreaking of the Kalayaan Avenue and Bonifacio Global City (BGC) stations on 13 February.

\n\n

The Kalayaan Avenue Station is located beneath BGC’s 11th Avenue and Uptown Open Parking, while the BGC Station is along McKinley Parkway, between Serendra and Market! Market!.

\n\n

The Contract Package 105 (CP 105) is a civil works-build only contract for the Kalayaan Avenue and BGC underground stations and tunnels in Brgy. Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, with a total route length of 1.331 km.

\n\n

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the stations within the BGC business district alone are projected to serve over 200,000 passengers daily during the project’s opening year.

Pasig segment

\n\n

The Pasig segment or Contract Package 104 (CP 104) is a civil works-build only contract for the Ortigas Avenue and Shaw Boulevard underground stations and tunnels. Awarded to Tokyu-Tobishima-Megawide Joint Venture (TTMJV), this section has a total route length of 3.397 km, connecting Quezon City, Pasig City and Taguig City.

\n\n

According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), construction of the Ortigas Avenue Station started in September 2025 after nearly three years of delay, while pre-construction of the Shaw Boulevard Station is now almost 100% complete.

\n\n

To date, the entire MMSP has achieved 90.92% right-of-way completion, with full completion expected in June, said DOTr. The subway will feature seamless interconnections with existing and planned rail lines, including LRT-1, LRT-2, MRT-3, MRT-4, MRT-7, and the North-South Commuter Railway, strengthening Metro Manila’s connectivity with nearby provinces.

“This is the scale of transformation that we are building. And this brings us closer to a fully connected subway system that will redefine mobility in our nation’s capital,” said President Marcos.

\n\n

Funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the 33.1-km MMSP is expected to slash travel time between Valenzuela City and BGC from 90 minutes to just 29 minutes once fully operational. Commutes from Quezon City to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) will also be reduced from 70 minutes to 35 minutes.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) have launched the tunnel boring machine (TBM) at the Metro Manila Subway Project’s (MMSP) Camp Aguinaldo Station.

\n\n

Under MMSP’s Contract Package 103, four TBMs will be deployed for the tunnelling of the Anonas and Camp Aguinaldo Stations. DOTr said a total of 19 TBMs are expected to be operating in the coming years to expedite the construction of this subway project, the country’s first underground rail system.

\n\n

According to DOTr, as of December 2024, the overall construction progress of the MMSP project is at 18.24%. Dubbed the Philippines’ ‘crown jewel’ of mass transit system, the 33-km Metro Manila Subway will cut across eight cities from Valenzuela City to FTI-Bicutan in Parañaque City.

\n\n

Once completed, the rail system will reduce the travel time between Valenzuela City and Pasay City to just 45 minutes, from one hour and 38 minutes, while servicing over half a million passengers daily.

A joint venture (JV) led by Shimizu Corporation has commenced the excavation of tunnels using the shield tunnelling method on the Philippines’ Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) CP101.

\n\n

The tunnel boring machine (TBM) launching ceremony was held earlier this month, on 9 January, attended by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and Jaime Bautista, Secretary of Department of Transportation. Shimizu’s JV partners include Fujita Corporation, Takenaka Civil Engineering & Construction Co Ltd, and EEI Corporation (a major local construction company).

\n\n

The MMSP, dubbed the first subway system in the Philippines, aims to alleviate the traffic congestion in Metro Manila due to a rapid population growth in the area. A total of 17 stations and a depot will be constructed along the 33.1-km section connecting Mindanao Avenue in the northern part of Metro Manila to Western Bicutan in the southern part of Metro Manila, where the Ninoy Aquino International Airport is located.

\n\n

In its press release, Shimizu said the JV will build the first 7.3-km section of the project – known as CP101 – from the depot to the north Metro Manila. This includes the depot, three stations and six shield tunnels that connect the stations (three northbound and three southbound). The CP101 project is scheduled to be completed in July 2027.

\n\n

The design and construction works under the CP101 contract have been divided into three segments, Shimizu further explained. First, the construction of the depot, Tandang Sora station and cut-and-cover tunnel, which was carried out in November 2019. The purpose is to facilitate the surface to underground transition. Second, the structure work for the Quirino Highway station and North Avenue station, which was carried out in March 2020. Lastly, the tunnel construction and the architectural and MEP works for the Quirino Highway station and North Avenue station, which was carried out in December 2021.

\n\n

The tunnelling work that has just begun involves the construction of six underground tunnels with a total length of 9.5 km and an inner diameter of 6.1 m, using up to six earth pressure balance (EPB) TBMs. The first two TBMs launched on 9 January were headed from the launching shaft at the depot to the Quirino Highway station. The northbound and southbound tunnels between North Avenue/Tandang Sora stations and Tandang Sora/Quirino Highway stations will be constructed in turn. Moreover, four TBMs will launch and arrive sequentially.

\n\n

Shimizu highlighted that, being the first subway construction project in the Philippines, the MMSP has gained much attention from the residents of Metro Manila and is highly anticipated to play a key role in relieving traffic congestion. The project has now reached a major milestone with the launching of the first boring machine, and is expected to reach its peak construction period in the coming years.
