Construction of Indonesia’s first subway line began in 2013, the MRT Jakarta. For now, Kota Station is the last section of the current phase II of the South-North MRT line. Situated near the old Jakarta Kota train station in the north of the city, the new station Kota will enable better access to the historical old town and business centre as a traffic hub.

\n\n

To carry out necessary diaphragm wall works for the construction of the new subway station, PT. Bauer Pratama Indonesia – the local subsidiary of Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH – was commissioned by client Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co Ltd in a joint operation with PT. Hutama Karya (Persero) to install the supporting walls for the lower level.

“Due to the challenging soil conditions, demanding technical requirements and strict location restrictions, we were awarded the contract for this project, which makes us very proud,” said Hemanth Narayanan, director at Bauer Indonesia.

Demanding project

\n\n

One of the major challenges in this project is that the work had to be carried out on a narrow stretch of land between two busy main roads and among historical structures and residential buildings. In addition, two bus lanes had to remain open for traffic during the entire construction period, which meant that work could only proceed on one side of the station at a time.

\n\n

“The Pantjoran Tea House, a protected cultural building, was less than 3 m away from the site and the diaphragm wall elements had to be installed directly on the property line,” explained Mr Narayanan. In total, 136 diaphragm wall elements were constructed with a thickness of 1,200 mm or 1,400 mm over a length of 867 mm.

\n\n

Due to the challenging subsoil consisting of soft to moderately firm clay at a depth of 7 m to 8 m, the panels were installed between 33 m and 43 m deep. The total area of the diaphragm walls constructed was nearly 29,500 sq m. The work was performed using a Bauer GB 50 hydraulic grab and a Bauer MC 86 duty-cycle crane.

\n\n

During the work, a polymer slurry was used to stabilise the excavated trenches. To inspect the quality of the slurry continually and comply with the requirements concerning verticality, regular tests were conducted. Because of the extremely limited site area, an adjacent property was also rented to set up the slurry plant and the stabilising slurry was transported onto the site via pipelines up to 360 m in length.

The reinforcement cages needed to stabilise the completed diaphragm wall elements were constructed at Bauer Indonesia’s workshop, which is located 40 km from the site. “A heavy haulage transport with police escort was organised every night after 10 pm for just-in-time delivery of the completed reinforcement cages onto the site,” said Mr Narayanan.

\n\n

“In addition, special reinforcement cages made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic had to be installed on the two curved sides of the station, since a tunnel boring machine will be used to construct the subway tunnels.” The construction and installation of the special reinforcement cages required particular caution, as the material is extremely brittle and rigid.

\n\n

The work began in December 2022 and was completed in June 2023. During the entire execution period, work sequences had to be followed strictly in order to keep from jeopardising the production schedule of the reinforcement cages. The particular location amidst buildings with protected monument status also called for highly cautious and low-vibration work methods in a very tight space.

\n\n

Bauer added that because the work took place in the historical city centre of Batavia, objects such as ceramics, wood stakes and mussels were occasionally found. “Although we were faced with some challenges during this project, we were able to complete the work on time and without incident,” said Mr Narayanan.

PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) opens a public information centre (MRT Jakarta Gallery) in Jakarta Kota Tua area. It is located inside Kota ‘Beos’ Commuterline station.

DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan inaugurated the gallery on 10 September 2022, along with president director and construction director of PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) Mohamad Aprindy and Silvia Halim.

\n\n

“Members of the public will be able to get more information about the MRT Jakarta phase 2 construction at our visitor centre, especially facts about the construction project in the Kota Tua area. Visitors can see miniatures of the future Kota MRT station, MRT train set, and tunnel boring machine (TBM) used to dig the underground tunnels,” explained Mr Aprindy.

\n\n

”Visitors could also see archaeological findings found at MRT Jakarta’s construction sites; building information modelling (BIM) system used for the construction project; as well as television screens exhibiting informative videos, animations, and infographics about MRT Jakarta. In addition, visitors can also take pictures in front of an underground tunnel photo wall and stay around in our designated seating area.”

Mr Aprindy added, “We also use the HoloLens technology and interactive projector to visualise the Kota MRT station. Other than that, we also provide Kota Tua special edition multi-trip ticket (MTT) cards and MRT Jakarta-themed souvenirs for public purchase.” PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) currently has another public information centre in Monas that is open for public.

The MRT Jakarta Gallery in Kota Tua is supported by Bentley software solutions and services. Visitors can enter the gallery from the west parking area on the north side of Beos Commuterline station and train platform area. The gallery is open daily from Monday to Sunday at 09.00-18.00 (Western Indonesia Time).

A joint venture of Japanese contractor Shimizu Corporation and Indonesian state-owned company PT Adhi Karya (Persero) Tbk has won the Contract Package 202 for the Jakarta MRT North-South Line Phase 2. Awarded by PT MRT Jakarta, it involves a 1,840-m-long underground section with three stations – Harmoni, Sawah Besar and Mangga Besar.

\n\n

Jakarta MRT is Indonesia’s first urban high-speed railway incorporating a metro system, and the 15.7-km-long first phase of the project between Central Jakarta and South Jakarta commenced its operation in March 2019. The civil and building work for the Phase 1 comprised six design-and-build contract packages, with Shimizu responsible for three of them, two as a JV lead company and one as a JV member.

\n\n

Phase 2 of the project will construct a 6.0-km rail line, extending from Bundaran HI Station at the northern end of the already-operational section up to the Kota district in northern Jakarta, where the seven new stations will be built. The construction work is divided into three contract packages, of which the CP201 – with a length of 2,676 m – from Bundaran HI Station to Harmoni Station was awarded to Shimizu-Adhi Karya JV in March 2020 as the first construction contract of the three packages.

\n\n

On the newly awarded CP202 contract, Shimizu explained that this 1,840-m underground section will include the construction of Harmoni Station with a length of 235 m, featuring two levels; Sawah Besar Station with a 200 m length and four levels; and Mangga Besar Station with a 220 m length and four levels.

\n\n

The tunnelling work consists of four shield tunnels connecting the stations (two sections for inbound and outbound respectively, with each bound’s total tunnel length of 1,184 m; a finished inner diameter of 6.05 m), with a length of 394 m between Harmoni-Sawah Besar and a length of 790 m between Sawah Besar-Mangga Besar. The construction period is approximately 89 months starting from July 2022. The Phase 2 is scheduled to begin its operation in 2029.

According to Shimizu, in the CP202 contract package, large-scale underground stations will be built using the cut-and-cover method under a trunk road with extremely heavy traffic. Construction activities will be carried out while diverting the traffic lanes various times, and it will also be necessary to partially cover the canal that runs through the centre of the trunk road.

\n\n

In addition, there are many buildings and underground pipes in proximity, “making this a highly challenging urban civil engineering project requiring a construction plan with careful consideration of the impact on the surrounding areas,” said the contractor.

\n\n

Shimizu pointed out that “Indonesia’s rapid economic growth has made the expansion of transportation infrastructure and environmental considerations a key issue for future development, and there is a need to improve the public transportation. We will continue to contribute to infrastructure development in Indonesia, focusing on large-scale construction projects where we can make the most of our technical capabilities.”
