Thailand’s CPAC, a cement and building materials company under Siam Cement Group (SCG), and South Korea’s Samsung E&A have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the commercialisation of 3D printing and special cementitious materials.
This partnership aims to elevate the construction industry to global standards by combining the strengths of the two companies – Samsung E&A’s international expertise in end-to-end construction solutions and CPAC’s record of excellence in cement and concrete products and technology.
“The signing of the MOU reflects the shared vision of both companies to drive innovation and new technology in advancing a modern and sustainable construction industry for the global market,” said SCG. In particular, the adoption of 3D printing technology is expected to enhance operational efficiency through an automated process controlled by digital files via a computer software. This in turn can reduce operational errors, address the shortage of skilled labour, shorten the construction period, minimise construction waste in line with green construction principles, and lower construction costs compared to traditional methods.
The collaboration will also focus on research and development in material science, machinery and equipment, as well as the exchange of knowledge and experience in 3D printing technology and special cementitious materials, added SCG. Samsung E&A will use its 3D printing mortar, which is robust, durable and capable of creating complex structures up to multi-storey buildings. Meanwhile, CPAC will provide its comprehensive technology consultation, covering 3D printing, engineering consultation, project evaluation support, and professional services in architectural design and other aesthetic considerations.
According to SCG, this combined expertise will now be applied to the construction of buildings in Saudi Arabia. Here, SCG also plays a crucial role in overseeing the supply chain process from start to finish, including the inspection and delivery of 350 t of cement to customers. The company helps to ensure that the cement delivery and construction using this innovative technology will be carried out efficiently, meet international standards and fully satisfy customer requirements.
“The strong collaboration between CPAC, Samsung E&A and SCG International will not only elevate the construction industry’s standards but also support the growth of new innovations and technologies for sustainable construction in the future,” concluded SCG.
