Rohde & Schwarz has showcased its established QPS201 static security scanner alongside the new QPS Walk500, a more compact walk-through scanner designed for large events with high foot traffic at Security Expo in Essen, Germany. The company has also highlighted its security solutions for critical infrastructure, including ARDRONIS, a drone defense system that detects, locates, and counters RF-based drone threats.

\n\n

Rohde & Schwarz security scanners are designed for high-security applications with controlled access, including aviation, border control, data centers, correctional facilities, loss prevention, critical infrastructure such as nuclear facilities, and large events. Security screening at major events presents a particular challenge: weapons, explosives, and other prohibited items must be detected reliably without slowing the flow of people.

\n\n

The QPS Walk500 is designed for this environment, enabling people to pass through security without stopping or removing coats and other outerwear. With a throughput of up to 750 people per hour, the scanner is designed to combine efficient screening with reliable threat detection.

\n\n

Its millimeter-wave technology and AI-based algorithms detect a broad range of materials, including metals, plastics, liquids, granules, organic materials, and ceramics. The system can also identify potentially dangerous objects that conventional metal detectors may miss.

\n\n

Automatic threat detection pinpoints suspicious objects on a neutral avatar, allowing security personnel to quickly identify areas requiring secondary inspection. An optional hand-masking feature allows people to carry everyday items such as phones, wallets, and keys without interfering with the scan, helping maintain throughput during periods of heavy visitor traffic.

\n\n

The lightweight QPS Walk500 offers a flexible alternative to conventional access-control systems. Its open design supports an intuitive screening experience, while audible and visual cues guide users through the process. The new model expands the QPS Walk portfolio with a compact solution designed for applications requiring high throughput.

Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies, today announces that it has achieved the 1,000th sale of its HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX computed tomography (CT) X-ray scanner.

\n\n

The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX produces high-resolution volumetric 3D images for quicker and deeper baggage assessment and automatic explosive detection with low false-alarm rates. This provides an advanced security screening experience that allows passengers to leave electronic devices and liquids in their hand luggage, enabling passengers to move through airport security checkpoints faster, without compromising on safety. The state-of-the-art security scanner ultimately leads to greater safety outcomes, more efficient operations and improved passenger satisfaction.

\n\n

Already in use in airports around the world, the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX has been shown to reduce time spent at security by up to 50%, with 90% of passengers at Milan Linate Airport passing through security in fewer than five minutes.

\n\n

Philo Daniel, Global Director Aviation and Urban Security said: “This is a significant achievement for us at Smiths Detection and is reflective of the remarkable system that the team have produced. Not only does the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX generate the highest quality images, but it also helps make faster decisions and has the quickest belt speed on the market – all of which contributes to getting passengers through security faster, while helping to make the world a safer place.”

\n\n

In addition, the HI-SCAN 6040 boasts the lowest energy consumption of its type, which not only helps customers achieve their sustainability goals but helps to reduce noise and heat emitting from the system – resulting in a calmer security screening experience and a low cost of ownership.

\n\n

The system has ECAC EDS CB C3 approval and featured on the Transport Security Administration’s (‘TSA’) CPSS QPL & APL for base, medium and large configuration checkpoint CT checkpoint screening systems. The CTiX scanner is also STAC, ENAC and IPMO approved, and has TSA APSS v6.2 Level 1 certification.

\n\n

Earlier this year, Smiths Detection announced the launch of the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Model S, which offers the same high-standards with a smaller footprint. This system has already achieved ECAC EDS CB C3 certification in Europe, with further local approvals to follow.

Fraport began testing the world’s first walk-through security scanner for passengers at Frankfurt Airport. The R&S QPS Walk2000 from Rohde & Schwarz is designed to speed up security checks. The first of these scanners is currently in use in Concourse A of Terminal 1. Passengers simply walk through the scanner at a normal pace without stopping. The test and evaluation phase is set to last up to six months and will provide Fraport and Rohde & Schwarz with important information to help optimize the system.

\n\n

The R&S QPS Walk2000 is a 360° walk-through scanner that can detect all kinds of items quickly and contact-free. The scanner provides a more pleasant security experience: passengers do not have to stop to be scanned and can instead slowly walk through the R&S QPS WalRohde & Schwarzk2000. The millimeterwave technology can also penetrate multiple layers of clothing, making it unnecessary to remove jackets and coats, for example. This makes a big difference in terms of comfort and personal privacy when going through security.

\n\n

AI based detection software automatically identifies metallic and non-metallic objects. Any anomalies detected on passengers are accurately displayed in real time on a unisex avatar, reducing the need for follow-up checks. If, however, a check is needed, security staff can focus on the areas that have triggered an alarm instead of patting down the passenger.

\n\n

The joint evaluation of the walk-through scanner at Frankfurt Airport by the German Federal Police and Fraport is yet another example of the continued excellent collaboration between Fraport and Rohde & Schwarz since Fraport assumed management of the airport’s security checks. Fraport acquired and set up the R&S QPS Walk2000, but it is the German Federal Police who are responsible for all security-related tests and will ultimately grant approval for use in day-to-day operations. The aim of the walk-through scanner is to make security checks faster and more comfortable for passengers while maintaining the same high level of security. The checkpoints selected for the test phase are in the Schengen Concourse A of Terminal 1. This concourse is ideal for such a test due to its high foot traffic: on average, 15,000 passengers use this concourse every day.

\n\n

The test phase at Frankfurt Airport aims to provide a direct comparison of the R&S QPS Walk2000 and the tried and tested R&S QPS201 scanners already installed and reveal any immediate differences. The collaborative trial installation aims to make walk-through security checks for passengers just as reliable as the highly efficient checks provided by the R&S QPS201.
